The European housing movements took back the streets. The Housing Action Days 2023 were the biggest we have ever seen !<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

From the\u00a0<\/span>24th of\u00a0<\/span>M<\/span>arch until the 2nd of April,<\/span>\u00a0the European Action Coalition for the right to housing and to the city (EAC)<\/span>\u00a0called\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>actions in the framework of\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>H<\/span>ousing\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>ction\u00a0<\/span>D<\/span>ays 2023\u00a0<\/span>\u2013\u00a0<\/span>#HAD2023.\u00a0<\/span>For this 5th<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>edition, tens of thousands of people organised demonstrations, talks, performances, gatherings, squat openings and many more actions and events<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>all over Europe.<\/span>\u00a0At a time of deepening housing crises, many groups from and outside the Coalition, decided to stand together against the neoliberal institutions and policies that benefit private accumulation instead of the people. Together, we showed our strength to fight back for our rights to housing, to the city and against the illegitimate rising living costs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Demonstrations took place in<\/span>\u00a0Lisbon,<\/span>\u00a0Porto and other cities of Portugal,<\/span>\u00a0Brussels<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0Li\u00e8ge<\/span>\u00a0and Namur,<\/span>\u00a0Berlin,\u00a0<\/span>Dublin, London, Stockholm, Athens, Bayonne,\u00a0<\/span>Paris and other cities\u00a0<\/span>all over Europe. In<\/span>\u00a0France<\/span>,<\/span> where they struggle against a criminalizing\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/span>law<\/a><\/span> attacking <\/span>squatters and tenants<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0more than 12 cities organised actions and demonstrations during the HAD2023<\/span>. There were occupations in Vienna (abandoned building)<\/span>, Brussels (undocumented people\u2019s squat) and Dublin<\/span>\u00a0(<\/span>National Department of Housing<\/span>). There were protest<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>gatherings<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>d<\/span>iscussion<\/span>s,<\/span>\u00a0events, political (self)education<\/span>\u00a0talks<\/span>, movie screenings<\/span>, banners hanged on bridges, e<\/span>tc\u2026 In some cities<\/span>\u00a0like Grenoble<\/span> comrades were organising a whole week of activities. You can see all the\u00a0<\/span>120<\/span>\u00a0actions in\u00a0<\/span>the action<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0map<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cWe didn\u2019t expect this mind-blowing response to our call\u201d said P\u00e9ter from the communication team of the EAC, \u201cwe even got solidarity messages from the Philippines\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>In Lisbon more than 30.000 people joined<\/span>\u00a0the biggest housing demonstration in decades! After\u00a0<\/span>some\u00a0<\/span>difficult years<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>people t<\/span>ook\u00a0<\/span>the streets again to express their anger\u201d\u00a0<\/span>said<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Rita<\/span>\u00a0from Habita.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIn Porto\u00a0<\/span>we were\u00a0<\/span>more than 7.000.\u00a0<\/span>As c<\/span>ollectives, organisations, unions and individuals affected by the housing crisis and capitalist exploitation\u00a0<\/span>we got together<\/span>\u00a0to show our strength. \u201c<\/span>12 different cities were demonstrating on the same day in France, bringing together different movements with the same claims: decrease of housing rents and energy prices, stop evictions, stop Kasbarian law, increase of public investments for social housing<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>It<\/span>\u00a0i<\/span>s super promising to see how\u00a0<\/span>different\u00a0<\/span>movements<\/span>\u00a0and demands converge in the streets in this moment,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>while mobilisation against the reform of pensions is growing bigger and radicalizing.<\/span>Nevertheless, the situation of tenants and homeless people has never been so bad in France. While rents increased by 3.5% and energy bills tripled during the last year, French government just voted a repressive law, hardly penalizing those who can no longer afford to pay a rent and squatters of empty buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn Vienna the Housing Action Days\u00a0<\/span>took place together with<\/span>\u00a0the protests against the European Gas Conference\u201d, added Laura from Stop Evictions Vienna, \u201cwe had some fruitful discussions with comrades from the climate justice spectrum to reinforce future collaborations of our different movements.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In Athens, where evictions are\u00a0<\/span>multiplying<\/span>\u00a0and becoming more violent, hundreds of people gathered in front of the Supreme Court to denounce a recent decision favouring funds ins<\/span>t<\/span>ead of people. \u201cEven if there are differences between countries, the problems are big and similar concerning housing<\/span>. In Greece we are often leading the sadest statistics, for example we have the highest housing costs<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in proportion to the income. T<\/span>his is why we decided also to respond to the call for Housing Action Days\u201d said Tonia from the Unitarian Intitative Against Auctions in Athens.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cOriginally<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>idea of the\u00a0<\/span>HAD\u00a0<\/span>taking place\u00a0<\/span>in the end of\u00a0<\/span>M<\/span>arch<\/span>, comes from the fact that,<\/span>\u00a0in a few countries<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>it is the time when\u00a0<\/span>the winter-moratorium for evictions is ending.\u00a0<\/span>H<\/span>ousing struggles are diverse according to the respective situation in the different countries.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This is why actions taking place are diverse too<\/span>\u201d explained\u00a0<\/span>Annie<\/span>\u00a0from the EAC. \u201cWe can see<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>all over Europe that the atmosphere is explosive<\/span>\u00a0in many neighbourhoods<\/span>. The skyrocketing cost of living<\/span>, added to<\/span>\u00a0the already unbearable housing costs<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>makes it clear\u00a0<\/span>for many people that\u00a0<\/span>self-organization\u00a0<\/span>from below\u00a0<\/span>is necessary\u00a0<\/span>to change politics\u201d concluded\u00a0<\/span>Yann<\/span>\u00a0from\u00a0<\/span>the facilitation team of the EAC<\/span>. \u201cMany people understand that the govern<\/span>mental<\/span>\u00a0measures to support the people are not only\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>sufficient but they<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>benefit\u00a0<\/span>the energy companies\u00a0<\/span>as they<\/span>\u00a0ensure their profits. The people also know that at some point the\u00a0<\/span>public<\/span>\u00a0debts\u00a0<\/span>will be followed by cuts in social policies and the private debts will cause evictions.\u00a0<\/span>We\u00a0<\/span>have learned\u00a0<\/span>our\u00a0<\/span>lessons from previous crises.
