{"id":2399,"date":"2016-10-20T00:41:29","date_gmt":"2016-10-19T22:41:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ripess.eu\/?p=2399"},"modified":"2016-10-26T00:59:16","modified_gmt":"2016-10-25T22:59:16","slug":"uk-alternatives-to-capitalism-the-solidarity-economy-perspective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.eu.ripess.rio20.net\/en\/uk-alternatives-to-capitalism-the-solidarity-economy-perspective\/","title":{"rendered":"UK, Alternatives to Capitalism: The Solidarity Economy Perspective"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/solidarityeconomics.org\/2016\/09\/21\/alternatives-to-capitalism-the-solidarity-economy-perspective\/\">Institute for Solidarity Economics<\/a><\/strong>, in partnership with\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirtoaction.com\">STIR Magazine<\/a><\/strong>, organised an important event in London, on the 18th October 2016: \u201cAlternatives to Capitalism: The Solidarity Economy Perspective\u201c.\u00a0The event explored the Solidarity Economy Movement as a practical, humane and just alternative to capitalism, with a series of interventions by\u00a0panelists drawn from different sectors of the economy, who discussed what they see already\u00a0happening in the UK that could be called Solidarity Economics and what kinds of cross sectoral initiatives they think could work to link their sectors to others.<\/p>\n<p>The keynote speaker was Michael Lewis, one of the founders of the\u00a0RIPESS, and of the Community Economic Development movement in Canada. \u00a0The other panelists were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Si\u00f4n Whellens, host and Master of Ceremonies, a co-op advocate and co-founder of the Worker Co-operative Solidarity Fund;<\/li>\n<li>Tony Greenham, Director of Economy, Enterprise and Manufacturing Programme at the Royal Society of Arts (RSA);<\/li>\n<li>Jane Grindey, founding member of Wolverton Community Energy;<\/li>\n<li>Ludovica Rodgers, Technology Commons activist and advocate of the platform cooperatives movement in the UK;<\/li>\n<li>Pat Conaty\u00a0&#8211; Research Associate at Co-operatives UK;<\/li>\n<li>Lynne Davies\u00a0-Member of the Land Workers\u2019 Alliance;<\/li>\n<li>Jason Nardi\u00a0&#8211; General Delegate\u00a0of RIPESS &#8211;\u00a0Solidarity Economy Europe network, and Solidarius Italy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The panelists\u00a0spoke about the\u00a0current economic conditions in Britain and presented a movement of \u201ceconomic organizing\u201d that is defying the current system from the bottom up, in many countries around Europe and across the world.\u00a0From the farmers of\u00a0<em>La Via Campesina<\/em>, to the care workers of the Italian social co-operative movement, to the activists resisting the modern enclosure of our\u00a0<em>Commons<\/em>, people around the world are coming together to build an economy that puts people and planet at its core.<\/p>\n<p>The evening public meeting was\u00a0preceded by a seminar at <strong>NEF &#8211;
