Report from<\/span> the <\/span>World Social Forum in Tunis<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The World Social Forum <\/span>took place<\/span> in Tunis from 24th <\/span>to the<\/span> 28th <\/span>of M<\/span>arch <\/span>2015, <\/span>under the banner of \u201c<\/span>Dignity\u201d. Despite the <\/span>terrorist <\/span>attack which happened shortly before, on <\/span>the 18<\/span>th<\/span> of <\/span>March, the <\/span>most <\/span>participant<\/span>s<\/span> wanted to be present to show their solidarity with the Tunisians and to <\/span>respond<\/span> against terrorism. <\/span>By<\/span> attack<\/span>ing<\/span> the tourism sector, <\/span>the aggressors<\/span> also hit<\/span> the local economy, <\/span>which \u2013 though we might regret it \u2013 depends heavily on the visits of tourists<\/span>. The opening march to the Bardo <\/span>museum<\/span> was the answer of the Tunisian people and <\/span>the <\/span>alter<\/span>-globalization activist. <\/span><\/p>\n

Dignity <\/span>and the issues concerning the free circulation of human beings <\/span>on the <\/span>P<\/span>lanet <\/span>were widely discussed. <\/span>There were five main themes, <\/span>developed in<\/span> 1500 workshops and, <\/span>according to the organisers,<\/span> with the participation of <\/span>50,000 people from around the world, <\/span>to tackle<\/span> the challenges of today\u2019s world and its future: <\/span><\/p>\n

– <\/span>C<\/span>itizenship and the role of social movements <\/span>to thwart<\/span> the power of the reactionary forces and neoliberal logic;
\n– \u201c<\/span>Beyond<\/span> border<\/span>s<\/span>\u201d <\/span>or<\/span> the issue of violence created by this concept, <\/span>which is<\/span> both abstract and very decisive for those who recognize themselves in a <\/span>country-nation<\/span> or who have <\/span>been deprived of it<\/span>;
\n– The <\/span>P<\/span>lanet and the climate emergency, environmental justice and the \u201cGood Li<\/span>ving<\/span>\u201d (Buen Vivir<\/span>)<\/span> paradigm<\/span>. The role of social justice, education, health, housing, food sovereignty, social and economic rights, as many dimensions threatened by the undermining of public services and <\/span>the S<\/span>tate, by <\/span>the commodification<\/span> logic <\/span>of transnational corporations<\/span>.
\n– Dignity, Eq<\/span>u<\/span>ity and <\/span>Fundamental r<\/span>ights, violated by the politics <\/span>of<\/span> religious discrimination, nationalis<\/span>m<\/span>, sex<\/span>ism<\/span> and by the <\/span>exploitation regimens, which have frown<\/span> almost everywhere;
\n– The challenge<\/span> of <\/span>Econom<\/span>ic <\/span>Alternatives, <\/span>bringing together the different formulas of creative resistance and generating solutions to rebuild fairer and more resilient communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

The workshop<\/span>s<\/span> w<\/span>ere<\/span> g<\/span>rouped<\/span> around all of those them<\/span>atic <\/span>areas <\/span>and n<\/span>ot surprisingly, <\/span>the ones promoted by <\/span>RIPESS <\/span>were mostly<\/span> in the alternatives space. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"RIPESS_at_wsf2015\"<\/a>RIPESS Europe hosted a workshop dedicated to \u201cuseful and necessary convergences between actors of Social and Solidarity Economy and <\/span>S<\/span>ocial movements\u201d. The workshop <\/span>co-organiser<\/span> was <\/span>the <\/span>National Confederation of Employees, a Belgian union that <\/span>raises<\/span> its members<\/span>‘ awareness<\/span> about the significance of the action of economic and environmental resistance. It was an <\/span>well attended and <\/span>interactive workshop, <\/span>and<\/span> everyone was able to participate in the debate, <\/span>bringing their experience<\/span>. Two members of Solidarity4all <\/span>from Greece<\/span> were <\/span>also <\/span>there, <\/span>raising the issue of how to build<\/span> resistance to the European imposed austerity regime. R<\/span>IPESS International promoted a workshop and the convergence assembly on Social solidarity economy and the Sustainable development goals (SDGs) or post-2015 agenda. <\/span>All participants considered that it was necessary to put in common their <\/span>work and specific capabilities<\/span> to monitor<\/span> the various processes, but also to disseminate and share <\/span>at the execution stage all<\/span> the vital information to support <\/span>the<\/span> resistance and mobilization <\/span>of people<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The meeting concluded agreeing on four main points:<\/p>\n

– Human Rights must be the basic framework of Sustainable Development <\/span>Goals<\/span> (SD<\/span>Gs<\/span>) applicable to all people and not just for th<\/span>ose living in the Global<\/span> South. Inequality and poverty is growing now in the North and the South and most be solved globally.
\n– There is an obvious contradiction between the pursuit of sustainable well-being for all and the current free trade agreements which destroy the foundations <\/span>for the SDGs’ <\/span>implementation and deprive people <\/span>of<\/span> their sovereignty <\/span>to decide <\/span>their own <\/span>form<\/span> of development <\/span>and<\/span> to contest the forms <\/span>of development<\/span> imposed by the <\/span>W<\/span>estern <\/span>world<\/span>.
\n– <\/span>There is the need of<\/span> a strong political program, not technocratic but w<\/span>here there is real will and investments<\/span>, <\/span>which are <\/span>clear and legally <\/span>binding<\/span>.
\n– The <\/span>organisations who participated <\/span>are committed to <\/span>defininf<\/span> a common <\/span>agenda of <\/span>mobilization<\/span>s<\/span> and alerts, so <\/span>to work on the convergence<\/span> with other initiative wh<\/span>ich<\/span> participated in the World Social Forum in Tunis in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n
