{"id":1167,"date":"2015-04-27T17:00:05","date_gmt":"2015-04-27T16:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ripess.eu\/?p=1167"},"modified":"2021-03-23T10:37:22","modified_gmt":"2021-03-23T09:37:22","slug":"report-from-the-world-social-forum-in-tunis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.eu.ripess.rio20.net\/en\/report-from-the-world-social-forum-in-tunis\/","title":{"rendered":"Report from the World Social Forum in Tunis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span>Report from<\/span> <span>the <\/span><span>World Social Forum in Tunis<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span>The World Social Forum <\/span><span>took place<\/span><span> in Tunis from 24th <\/span><span>to the<\/span><span> 28th <\/span><span>of M<\/span><span>arch <\/span><span>2015, <\/span><span>under the banner of \u201c<\/span><span>Dignity\u201d. Despite the <\/span><span>terrorist <\/span><span>attack which happened shortly before, on <\/span><span>the 18<\/span><span>th<\/span><span> of <\/span><span>March, the <\/span><span>most <\/span><span>participant<\/span><span>s<\/span><span> wanted to be present to show their solidarity with the Tunisians and to <\/span><span>respond<\/span><span> against terrorism. <\/span><span>By<\/span><span> attack<\/span><span>ing<\/span><span> the tourism sector, <\/span><span>the aggressors<\/span> <span>also hit<\/span><span> the local economy, <\/span><span>which \u2013 though we might regret it \u2013 depends heavily on the visits of tourists<\/span><span>. The opening march to the Bardo <\/span><span>museum<\/span><span> was the answer of the Tunisian people and <\/span><span>the <\/span><span>alter<\/span><span>-globalization activist. <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span>Dignity <\/span><span>and the issues concerning the free circulation of human beings <\/span><span>on the <\/span><span>P<\/span><span>lanet <\/span><span>were widely discussed. <\/span><span>There were five main themes, <\/span><span>developed in<\/span><span> 1500 workshops and, <\/span><span>according to the organisers,<\/span> <span>with the participation of <\/span><span>50,000 people from around the world, <\/span><span>to tackle<\/span><span> the challenges of today\u2019s world and its future: <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span>&#8211; <\/span><span>C<\/span><span>itizenship and the role of social movements <\/span><span>to thwart<\/span><span> the power of the reactionary forces and neoliberal logic;<br \/>\n&#8211; \u201c<\/span><span>Beyond<\/span><span> border<\/span><span>s<\/span><span>\u201d <\/span><span>or<\/span><span> the issue of violence created by this concept, <\/span><span>which is<\/span><span> both abstract and very decisive for those who recognize themselves in a <\/span><span>country-nation<\/span><span> or who have <\/span><span>been deprived of it<\/span><span>;<br \/>\n&#8211; The <\/span><span>P<\/span><span>lanet and the climate emergency, environmental justice and the \u201cGood Li<\/span><span>ving<\/span><span>\u201d (Buen Vivir<\/span><span>)<\/span> <span>paradigm<\/span><span>. The role of social justice, education, health, housing, food sovereignty, social and economic rights, as many dimensions threatened by the undermining of public services and <\/span><span>the S<\/span><span>tate, by <\/span><span>the commodification<\/span><span> logic <\/span><span>of transnational corporations<\/span><span>.<br \/>\n&#8211; Dignity, Eq<\/span><span>u<\/span><span>ity and <\/span><span>Fundamental r<\/span><span>ights, violated by the politics <\/span><span>of<\/span><span> religious discrimination, nationalis<\/span><span>m<\/span><span>, sex<\/span><span>ism<\/span><span> and by the <\/span><span>exploitation regimens, which have frown<\/span><span> almost everywhere;<br \/>\n&#8211; The challenge<\/span><span> of <\/span><span>Econom<\/span><span>ic <\/span><span>Alternatives, <\/span><span>bringing together the different formulas of creative resistance and generating solutions to rebuild fairer and more resilient communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span>The workshop<\/span><span>s<\/span><span> w<\/span><span>ere<\/span><span> g<\/span><span>rouped<\/span><span> around all of those them<\/span><span>atic <\/span><span>areas <\/span><span>and n<\/span><span>ot surprisingly, <\/span><span>the ones promoted by <\/span><span>RIPESS <\/span><span>were mostly<\/span><span> in the alternatives space. <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span><a href=\"http:\/\/ripess.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/RIPESS_groups_at_wsf2015.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1194\" src=\"http:\/\/ripess.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/RIPESS_groups_at_wsf2015.png\" alt=\"RIPESS_at_wsf2015\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.eu.ripess.rio20.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/04\/RIPESS_groups_at_wsf2015.png 500w, https:\/\/dev.eu.ripess.rio20.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/04\/RIPESS_groups_at_wsf2015-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>RIPESS Europe hosted a workshop dedicated to \u201cuseful and necessary convergences between actors of Social and Solidarity Economy and <\/span><span>S<\/span><span>ocial movements\u201d. The workshop <\/span><span>co-organiser<\/span><span> was <\/span><span>the <\/span><span>National Confederation of Employees, a Belgian union that <\/span><span>raises<\/span><span> its members<\/span><span>&#8216; awareness<\/span><span> about the significance of the action of economic and environmental resistance. It was an <\/span><span>well attended and <\/span><span>interactive workshop, <\/span><span>and<\/span><span> everyone was able to participate in the debate, <\/span><span>bringing their experience<\/span><span>. Two members of Solidarity4all <\/span><span>from Greece<\/span><span> were <\/span><span>also <\/span><span>there, <\/span><span>raising the issue of how to build<\/span> <span>resistance to the European imposed austerity regime. A report on the debate can be found here <\/span><span>[link].<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span>R<\/span><span>IPESS International promoted a workshop and the convergence assembly on Social solidarity economy and the Sustainable development goals (SDGs) or post-2015 agenda. <\/span><span>All participants considered that it was necessary to put in common their <\/span><span>work and specific capabilities<\/span> <span>to monitor<\/span><span> the various processes, but also to disseminate and share <\/span><span>at the execution stage all<\/span><span> the vital information to support <\/span><span>the<\/span><span> resistance and mobilization <\/span><span>of people<\/span><span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\">The meeting concluded agreeing on four main points:<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span>&#8211; Human Rights must be the basic framework of Sustainable Development <\/span><span>Goals<\/span><span> (SD<\/span><span>Gs<\/span><span>) applicable to all people and not just for th<\/span><span>ose living in the Global<\/span><span> South. Inequality and poverty is growing now in the North and the South and most be solved globally.<br \/>\n&#8211; There is an obvious contradiction between the pursuit of sustainable well-being for all and the current free trade agreements which destroy the foundations <\/span><span>for the SDGs&#8217; <\/span><span>implementation and deprive people <\/span><span>of<\/span><span> their sovereignty <\/span><span>to decide <\/span><span>their own <\/span><span>form<\/span><span> of development <\/span><span>and<\/span><span> to contest the forms <\/span><span>of development<\/span><span> imposed by the <\/span><span>W<\/span><span>estern <\/span><span>world<\/span><span>.<br \/>\n&#8211; <\/span><span>There is the need of<\/span><span> a strong political program, not technocratic but w<\/span><span>here there is real will and investments<\/span><span>, <\/span><span>which are <\/span><span>clear and legally <\/span><span>binding<\/span><span>.<br \/>\n&#8211; The <\/span><span>organisations who participated <\/span><span>are committed to <\/span><span>defininf<\/span><span> a common <\/span><span>agenda of <\/span><span>mobilization<\/span><span>s<\/span><span> and alerts, so <\/span><span>to work on the convergence<\/span><span> with other initiative wh<\/span><span>ich<\/span><span> participated in the World Social Forum in Tunis in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\">Read the whole report on the convergence assembly here.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><em>[By Josette Combes, MES]<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Report from the World Social Forum in Tunis The World Social Forum took place in Tunis from 24th to the 28th of March 2015, under the banner of \u201cDignity\u201d.
